ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's basketball team fell 86-68 to visiting Whitworth on Thursday, snapping a three-game win streak.
A slow start put the Panthers in an early hole as Whitworth scored the first eight points of the game and led by as many as 22 in the second half. After a pair of losses to SCIAC opponents on their trip to California, the Pirates outrebounded and outshot the Panthers on the way to the win.
Jake Heberle led Chapman with 15 points while Cruz Billings added 13 points and four assists. However, Whitworth held a 47-25 advantage in rebounds and came away with 11 steals to score 20 second chance points and 12 fast break points.
After the lead reached 18 points for Whitworth with 4:11 to go in the first half, Chapman was able to cut the lead down to 13 by halftime and just 10 after Heberle knocked down a three pointer to open the second half scoring. Whitworth responded with an 11-0 run to push the lead to 21 and stayed comfortably in front the rest of the way.
Chapman is back on the Hutton Center floor on Saturday to take on Emerson at 3 p.m.
