ORANGE, Calif. – A fast start from Kade Zimmerman and a game-sealing interception from Tate Zimmerman led the Chapman University football team to a 35-25 win at Cal Lutheran on Saturday. The Panthers scored 22 points in the first quarter and extended their winning streak to four games.
Kade Zimmerman caught nine passes in the first quarter, including two touchdowns, as Chapman built a 22-7 to start the game. Tyler Pacheco and Kade Zimmerman connected 10 times for 122 yards in the game. Pacheco threw for 178 yards and ran for 78 more to help the Panther secure the crucial SCIAC win.
The win put the Panthers firmly in the driver's seat for a third consecutive SCIAC Championship Game appearance as well as the advantage in locking up the chance to host the championship.
Chapman scored on each of its first three possessions to build the big lead. Pacheco took the first score in himself and found Zimmerman in the end zone two plays after a blocked punt. The two connected again after Pacheco evaded pressure and heaved a pass down the sideline to a waiting Zimmerman for the touchdown.
After its opening touchdown, Chapman forced CLU to go three-and-out. Chris Rue broke through the line to block the punt and Emilio Pucci jumped on the loose ball to set Chapman up in the red zone.
A 100 yard kick return put Cal Lutheran on  the board and the Kingsmen kept momentum to tie the game in the third quarter. Pacheco and Chapman responded in the fourth quarter with a nine minute drive that ended in a 19-yard TD rush for Andrew Latu. The Panthers added on a late field goal – Carson Nichols' second field goal of the game.
In total, the Panthers offense outgained the Kingsmen 368-202, including a 194-to-24 advantage in rushing yards. Jacob Gaudi led the team with nine tackles, followed by six from Andrew Buck, but Tate Zimmerman made the game-sealing interception in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.
Fischer Huss and Latu each rushed for over-50 yards. Nichols made both of his field goal attempts, hitting from 39 yards in the third quarter and 38 in the fourth.
Chapman returns home next week to take on CMS at 7 p.m.
