ORANGE, Calif. – The Surf Division was clinched. A SCIAC Championship Game host was clinched. The Chapman University football team clinched it all with a 37-31 double overtime win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
Andrew Latu punched in the game-winning touchdown in the second overtime and the defense forced three consecutive incompletions to end the game and keep Chapman undefeated in the SCIAC.
With the victory, Chapman is now 5-2 overall and 5-0 in the SCIAC. Pomona-Pitzer fell to La Verne in a Surf Division showdown to clinch the division for the Panthers. Cal Lutheran then lost two Redlands in double overtime, clinching the hosting responsibilities for the Panthers.
Chapman and CMS combined for over 400 rushing yards as Tyler Pacheco ran for 127 yards on 25 carries to lead the Panthers and Cooper Nixon ran for 207 yards on 26 carries for the Stags.
Chapman opened up 16-3 lead to start the game but CMS scored just before halftime and then on the first play of the third quarter to take a 17-16 lead. Mixon took the first play 84 yards down his own sideline for the go-ahead score.
The teams traded punts until early in the fourth when Pacheco led a 15-play, 88-yard drive that spanned nine minutes and ended with a two-yard TD run from Latu. A two-point conversion from Pacheco to Nate Krautwald boosted the Panthers lead to seven with less than five minutes to play.
Nixon and Peter Boehm led the Stags back down the field to try and tie the game. Chapman looked to have escaped as the ball was fumbled on the one yard line but the CMS receiver was ruled down and Nixon punched in the game-tying TD.
After trading touchdowns in the first overtime, Pacheco opened the second OT with a 24 yard run to put Chapman one yard out from the end zone. Latu punched it in for his second score and the Chapman defense looked to seal the victory. A false start put CMS behind the sticks and Boehm failed to complete a pass.
Tyler Boynton led the Chapman defense with 12 tackles, including three for a loss and a sack. Joey Bustos had 10 tackles as well. Pacheco went 11-for-18 in the passing game, finding Kade Zimmerman six times for 105 of those yards. Less than 90 seconds into the game, Zimmerman caught a 42-yard pass from Pacheco for a long touchdown.
Chapman stays home to face Pomona-Pitzer next week as the Panthers finish the season with back-to-back Surf Division matchups. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
