ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's soccer team returned to Wilson Field with a 1-1 draw against visiting Wheaton on Saturday. Jonah Friang scored his first goal of the season to put the Panthers up early.
Chapman saw its record move to 1-2-1 with the draw against the Thunder, who are 1-3-1. With 32 combined shots in the match, both teams had opportunities to come up on top but neither could find the go-ahead goal.
The goals came appropriately in separate halves as Chapman seemed to have the upper hand in the first half but Wheaton bounced back and applied pressure in the second half. The Panthers outshot the Thunder 8-3 in the first half but it was Wheaton with a 12-9 advantage in the second half.
Friang's goal came in the 24th minute when he finished a pass over the top from Jackson Busby to put Chapman up 1-0. Cooper Falling equalized for Wheaton in the 62nd minute after a flurry of shot from the Thunder, including one off the crossbar just moments before. David Vezza touched the loose ball over Falling to set up the goal.
After earning just one corner kick in the first half, Wheaton earned six in the second and won many in the air but couldn't find the net. The Panthers golden opportunity came later in the second when a ball was misplayed in the back and led to a 1-on-1 opportunity with the keeper. Jack Krahel made the sprawling save to keep the match tied.
Krahel made six saves for the Thunder while Alex Glynn made a pair of saves for Chapman.
The Panthers are back on the field in the morning when they host Whitman at 11 a.m. in a Sunday matinee.
