ORANGE, Calif. – Annika Carlson scored six goals as the Chapman University women's lacrosse team stayed undefeated at home with a 17-16 win over Redlands. The Panthers improved to 7-2 overall and 5-2 in the SCIAC with the close victory.
Carlson tied her season-high with six goals, needing just 13 seconds to score her first one. Carlson won the opening draw and sprinted straight at the goal to put the first shot of the game in the back of the net just 13 seconds after the opening whistle. She also picked up 11 draw controls and caused three turnovers.
Ada Carr scored three goals for the Panthers while Tade Scheid had two goals and two assists. Anna Hereu made 12 saves.
The Panthers looked to be rolling as Carr scored just 15 seconds after Carlson's opening goal to make it 2-0 Chapman less than 30 seconds into the match. However, the Bulldogs fought back and scored the next two goals to tie the game at 2-2.
Chapman surged ahead with a four-goal run but Redlands bounced back their ow four-goal run to tie the match at 6-6. The match continued to be a hard-fought battle as it was tied 7-7 then 9-9 before Chapman ended the second quarter on a three-goal run for a 12-9 advantage.
Redlands swung momentum in the third as the Bulldogs scored the first four goals of the quarter to take their first lead of the afternoon at 13-12. Despite Chapman's fourth yellow putting the Panthers down a player for two minutes, Carlson answered with back-to-back goals to regain the lead for Chapman.
Redlands did not go quietly as Catie Ramicone found the back of the net with 1.4 seconds left in the quarter to tie the match again at 14-all. Carr gave Chapman a lead less than a minute into the fourth and the Panthers led the rest of the way. The Bulldogs stayed within striking distance and had a chance to tie the match late but Hereu came away with a big save as the possession clock wound down and the Panthers were able to run out the clock.
Chapman picked up 24 draw controls compared to Redlands' 11 to aid win the victory.
Chapman hosts Cal Lutheran on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
