Second half run leads lacrosse to comeback win over Oxy

ORANGE, Calif. –A huge third quarter run led the Chapman University women's lacrosse team to a 19-13 victory over visiting Occidental on Saturday. The Panthers improved to 2-1 on the season with the win as both Josie Morrissey and Olivia Holmes scored five goals to lead the way.

A slow start to the match saw the Tigers build their early lead up to 8-3 on a Bella Kwan goal with 5:09 left in the second quarter. Holmes and Morrissey scored just 13 seconds apart to close the gap to three where it stayed at halftime.

The Panthers flipped a switch at halftime. After Oxy scored a goal off the initial draw to start the third, the Panthers scored 12 consecutive goals to flip a 9-5 deficit into a 17-9 fourth quart lead. Ada Carr scored all three of her goals in the run and assisted on three more.

Carr put an exclamation point on the run as she scored two goals just nine seconds apart. After scoring to open the fourth quarter, she scooped up the ensuing draw control near the restraining line and sped past the defense to score again and put the Panthers up 15-9 early in the fourth.

After allowing the opening goal of the third quarter, the Panthers won the remaining nine controls to score eight times in the frame. Six consecutive goals from the third to the fourth quarters came while the Panthers were up a player due to Oxy being shown a yellow card, followed immediately by a red card to a second player.

In total, their were 21 cards shown in the contest with most being green. The Panthers picked up 24 draw controls compared to Oxy's 12. Anna Hereu made seven saves in goal for the Panthers. Morrissey had three assists to go along with her five goals while Holmes assisted on a pair of goals. Carr added three assists to her three goals while Ava Regan also scored a hat trick.
