Orange, Calif.— Four Panthers scored at least 14 points as Chapman (4-5, 2-0) dominated Whitworth (3-5, 0-0) 76-67 Saturday afternoon at the Hutton Sports Center. Chapman's
Makena Nitao (18 pts.),
Shanna Brown (17 pts.),
Kira Watanabe (15 pts.) and
Layla Woods (14 pts.) combined for 64 of the team's 76 total points. Nitao led the way with eight assists and five rebounds to get her team going offensively.
Brown also added seven boards and four assists to contribute to the team's 20 total for the game. The sophomore forward has a knack for making something out of nothing offensively, creating in chaos down low and threading the needle to get easy buckets for teammates.
Woods and Brown worked in tandum, as Brown fed Woods the ball down low maintaining the strong offensive pace for the Panthers. Woods also gobbled up a game high 13 rebounds, good for her third straight double double and fourth in the last five games.
Watanabe also joined in on the fun, knocking down five threes for 15 points, including two back-to-back threes midway through the fourth quarter to give the Panthers an 11 point lead they would never relinquish. the guard spread the floor in a way that made it virtually impossible for the Pirates to cover all the ground.
After getting off to a relatively slow start, the Panthers held Whitworth to just 40 percent shooting from the field while causing 15 turnovers for the game. In turn, the Panthers 16 points off those turnovers.
Chapman will return home on Thursday, Dec. 18 against The College of New Jersey at 12:00 p.m. as they aim to clinch their fourth straight victory on the season.
