ORANGE, Calif. – Miscues and penalties cost the Chapman University football team in a 21-17 loss to visiting Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday. The Panthers' nine-game SCIAC win streak was snapped with the loss.
The Panthers' defense allowed just 174 yards and only six first downs while Caleb Padrid and Renick Martin each had an interception. However, a 75-yard trick play and a blocked punt returned for a touchdown gave the Sagehens momentum and a 14-7 lead.
Chapman outgained Pomona-Pitzer 451-174 and held the ball 43:23 to limit the Sagehens to just 16:37 of possession time. Gio Ursino ran the ball 31 times for 156 yards and caught three passes for 33 yards. The Sagehens' leading rusher had 15 yards and the offense saw five different players take a snap at quarterback.
In the end, the Sagehens took advantage of a second blocked punt inside the Chapman 30 to jump ahead 21-17 and score the winning touchdown with just under 10 minutes to go.
The Panthers committed 13 penalties for 128 yards, threw two interceptions, had a pair of blocked punts and missed a field goal but still found themselves with an opportunity to win the game on their final drive. Joey Yellen and Ursino marched the Panthers into the red zone but the drive stalled there as three passes fell incomplete and Yellen's final scramble came up short in the final 10 seconds to turn over the ball on downs.
Ursino and Amir Adams both caught touchdowns for the Panthers and Jax Hudson hit a go-ahead field goal in the fourth quarter before the Sagehens scored on the short field five minutes later.
Chapman heads to Cal Lutheran next weekend for a Surf Division matchup at 7 p.m.
