Football defeats Cal Lutheran in Surf Division showdown

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University football team completed a season sweep of Cal Lutheran with a 28-18 vroad victory. Gio Ursino and Kade Zimmerman fueled a runaway third quarter with a trio of big plays.

Zimmerman caught a pair of touchdown passes from Joey Yellen, covering 38 yards and 71 yards to bookend a 21-point third quarter. Ursino added a 49-yard touchdown run in the middle as the Panthers opened up a 28-10 lead.

Ursino ended the game with 136 yards on just 17 carries, averaging eight yards per carry. Zimmerman caught three total passes for 110 yards. Yellen was 17-for-27 for 277 yards and completed another touchdown pass to Tyler Pacheco in the first quarter.

The Panthers limited Cal Lutheran to just 82 yards rushing and 194 yards passing. Jaden Casey ran for a touchdown and threw an interception as Collin Keefe picked off Casey in the fourth quarter for Chapman's 14th interception of the year.

Alexander Terriquez had nine tackles to lead the defense while Tate Zimmerman's 2.5 tackles for loss led the stout effort against the run. Keefe also forced a fumble and had six tackles to go along with his interception.

The Panthers' win sets up a crucial game next week as Chapman welcomes CMS to for a Surf Division matchup between the two leaders of the division. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
