ORANGE, Calif. – Five all-time greats will join the Chapman University Athletics Hall of Fame at the 41st Night of Champions and Hall of Fame Inductions on October 18-19, 2024. The newest class of Hall of Famers includes All-Americans from three different decades and the Hall of Fame's first-ever inductee from an aquatic sport.
The five legends to be inducted into Chapman's Hall of Fame are three-time track & field All-American Eric Van Skike '83, All-American pitcher Devin Drag '07, basketball record-holder Kimi Takaoka '14, water polo and swimming standout Julie Case '14 and two-time All-American Val Geiger '15.
Van Skike takes his rightful place in the Hall of Fame after a record-setting career from 1979-81 that resulted in three All-American honors. He is the third Panther to join the Hall of Fame from the dominant Division II era of Chapman track & field, joining Joe Phillips and Brad Breen. Van Skike placed fifth in the discus at the 1980 NCAA Division II Track & Field Championships. third in 1981 and then placed eighth in 1983. He still holds the school record in the discus with a throw of 179-feet, 11-inches.
With a 30-2 career record on the mound, Drag was one of the most dominant pitchers in Chapman history. He helped the Panthers to postseason appearances in all four years, including three World Series appearances. He earned First Team All-American honors as a junior and a senior and finished his career as the 2007 D3baseball.com Pitcher of the Year. He was the first Panther to earn 30 career victories on the mound and graduated with the Chapman record for career ERA while also ranking second for strikeouts. His name still appears up and down Chapman's pitching record lists, including a school record 16 wins with a 16-0 record in 2007.
Takaoka finished her career with as a Josten's Trophy Finalist, labeling her as one of the top student-athletes in Division III women's basketball in 2014. She is the only Panther to earn the distinction as a finalist for the prestigious Josten's Trophy. Her accomplishments on the court included two All-SCIAC and All-Region awards as well as being named the SCIAC Player of the Year as a senior in 2013-14. She still ranks second in Chapman history with 1,539 career points and ranks among the top-10 in several scoring categories. Her successful career extended beyond the basketball court as she was also a two-time Academic All-American and three-time Academic All-District selection.
For the first time in the history of the Hall of Fame, a Chapman student-athlete will be inducted from an aquatics sport. Case earned the distinction after excelling in both water polo and swimming during her years as a Panther. As a long distance freestyler, Case set (and still holds) the Chapman records in the 500 free, 1000 free and 1650 free. She began her career as the only Panther to be named the Pacific Coast Swimming Conference Swimmer of the Meet and became Chapman's first swimming SCIAC champion a year later, winning the 1650 free in Chapman's first year in the conference. She was a three-time All-SCIAC finisher in swimming and recorded an NCAA "B" Cut in each of her last three season. As a water polo player, Case also earned All-America Honorable Mention in 2012 after leading the team in assists.
Geiger was a two-time All-American and All-Region selection as well as a three-time All-SCIAC selection as a middle blocker for the Chapman women's volleyball team. Her 489 kills during her junior season are still the most in school history. She ranks second in career kills and third in career hitting percentage with her name continually appearing in the Chapman season and career record books. She helped the Panthers to two NCAA appearances and First Round wins in 2011 and 2012. She was named Chapman's Female Student-Athlete of the Year for 2014-15. Geiger excelled in the classroom as well with three SCIAC All-Academic awards.
All five inductees will officially join the Hall of Fame at the Night of Champions on Oct. 18, 2024 and will unveil their plaque on Gray Victory Way at halftime of the football game on Oct. 19.
