ORANGE, Calif. – All three goals came in the second half as the Chapman University men's soccer team defeated visiting Bethesda 2-1 on Saturday at Wilson Field. Peter Hyan chipped in the game-winner for the Panthers.
Chapman improved to 3-1 on the season with a pair of second half goals. Jake Williams knocked in a penalty kick to open the scoring and Peter Hyan chipped home the game winner.
Leo Wells drew the penalty for the Panthers and Williams stepped up to the spot in the 54th minute, drilling a shot into the lower right corner for a 1-0 lead.
Just under 10 minutes later, the Lion Angels earned a free kick about 40 yards out. Danilo Teixeira's initial header was saved by Patrick Bulubenchi but the rebound was buried by Joao Dias to tie the match at 1-1. However, it didn't take long for Chapman to respond.
As play resumed, the Panthers sent the ball forward just over one minute after surrendering a goal. A quick touch from Jonah Friang to Hayden Rouse played in Hyan behind the defense. With the goalie well off his line, Hyan took a touch over to his left and chipped a shot into the empty net for the game-winner.
Chapman outshot Bethesda 13-8 in the contest and Bulubenchi made a pair of saves. Chapman held possession nearly 60 percent of the match.
The Panthers jump into their SCIAC schedule on Wednesday when they host Redlands at 4 p.m.
