Baseball tops Whittier in St. Patty's slugfest

Box Score

ORANGE, Calif. — Baseball took it to Whittier winning game one of this weekend's three-game set 12-2 in seven innings at Hart Park on St. Patrick's Day, Friday, March 17.

It was a walkathon for the Panthers as Chapman reached base nine times via base on balls. Oli Sellman, who had four plate appearances, netted only one at bat and three walks.

Chapman got off to a slow start down 2-0 not scoring until the fourth inning. From then on the Panthers put up three, four and five runs in back-to-back-to-back innings before walking it off in the seventh, via a Trent Turquand RBI single to drive home Drew Hallgren with two outs.

The bottom of the order got it going in the fourth as Austin Dudas drove home Chapman's first run of the game with two strikes and two outs. The next batter Ryan Nopper continued the two-out rally with a two-run single of his own.

Chapman didn't surrender the lead from then on, as AJ Anzai settled in on the mound earning his third win of the season while pitching six innings allowing only two runs.

Turquand and Josh Phillips were the only Panthers with multi-hit games. Turquand ended 3-for-4 driving in three runs, while Phillips went 2-for-4 bringing home four steaks. Phillips is now 11 for his last 27 after starting the season 6-for-34.

Chapman will finish the series against the Poets tomorrow in a double header in Whittier at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., before returning home on Sunday to take on Middlebury at 11 a.m.
