Women's basketball downs CMS for first SCIAC

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's basketball team picked up its first SCIAC win with a 74-61 victory over visiting Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday. Layla Woods led the Panthers with a near double-double as Chapman improved to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the SCIAC.

Woods finished the game shooting 8-for-11 in just 23 minutes on the court before fouling out in the fourth quarter. She also had eight rebounds. Aidan Sherfey had 11 points while Zoe Zurasky had eight points and four assists.

After the first quarter ended with the teams tied at 16-16, The Panthers outscored CMS 39-26 over the next two quarters to build a 13-point lead. The Panthers built momentum with a late run to end the first half. The teams were tied at 30-30 with just under three minutes to go but the Panthers finished on a 7-1 run to take the 37-31 lead into the locker room.

After knocking Tanya Ghai hit one free throw, the Athenas turned the ball over on their final three possession while Sherfey and Hana Speaks knocked down a pair of shots and Zoe Zurasky ended the half with a three-pointer.

The run continued into the third quarter as the lead reached double digits on Woods' layup with 6:05 left in the third. CM was able to quickly cut the lead in half but Chapman responded with a 10-2 run over the final five minutes of the third to go up 13. The lead grew to as much as 17 points in the fourth as Chapman continued to pull away for the win.

Eleven different players scored at least two points for the Panthers as Chapman shot 42.2 percent as a team and went 5-for-11 from three-point range. The Panthers also knocked down 19-of-21 free throws while CMS was 21-of-34 from the charity stripe and made just 4-of-16 three-point shots.

The Panthers return home next Saturday to take on Redlands in one more SCIAC game before the holiday break in the SCIAC schedule.
