ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's basketball team dropped its SCIAC opener 65-51 to visiting Occidental on Wednesday.
Blakeley Stoughton led the Panthers with 17 points.
Both teams struggled to find their offensive rhythms early but the Tigers ended the game on an 18-6 run to pull away for the win. Chapman shot just 33 percent on the night with 17 turnovers while Occidental made just 1-of-17 three-point attempts. Oxy fueled its late run by driving to the rim and ending the game with a 38-18 advantage for points in the paint.
Stoughton scored 17 points, including knocking down three three-pointers while
Cruz Billings also hit a pair of three-pointers to finish with 10 points.
Jake Heberle had 10 rebounds to go along with seven points.
The Tigers were led by 25 points from Andrew Waldman and 19 from Jacob Koretz. As a team, Occidental went 16-for-19 from the free throw line while Chapman went 9-for-17.
The Panthers host CMS on Saturday in the first game of a SCIAC basketball doubleheader. The men's game tips off at 2 p.m. with the women's game following at 4 p.m.
