ORANGE, Calif. – A strong night from Julin Kenison led the Chapman University women's volleyball team to a four-set victory over visiting Occidental. The Panthers started strong and finished off a 25-7, 18-25, 26-19, 25-16 victory to move to 7-10 overall and 3-5 in the SCIAC.
Kenison came away with 21 kills in the match while hitting .380 to lead the Panthers to the win. She also had 13 digs. Olivia Sampson also had a double-double with 13 kills and 15 digs while Gabby Carbonel had 38 assists and 12 digs.
The Panther cruised to an opening set, holding Occidental to just three kills on -.233 hitting. Kenison and Sampson combined for eight kills as the Panthers hit .231 as a team. Chapman was also able to sideout 85 percent of the time compared to a 24 percent sideout rate from Oxy.
The Tigers turned it on in the second set as Oxy hit .209 while Chapman was at .077. Occidental jumped out to a 6-1 lead and kept the Panthers from making any lengthy runs to steal the set.
Kenison caught fire in the back half of the match, going off for 13 kills in the last two sets. Chapman hit .359 in the third to regain control of the match and held Oxy to a .000 hitting percentage in the fourth to seal the victory.
Aniya Hawthorne led Occidental with eight blocks to go along with seven kills.
The Panthers are off this weekend but return to the Hutton Center floor to take on Pomona-Pitzer at 7 p.m. next Tuesday.
