ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's volleyball team fell in four sets to visiting Pomona-Pitzer – 25-18, 16-25, 25-17, 25-23. Julin Kenison led the Panthers with 17 kills.
Kenison's 17 kills and 12 digs gave her the seventh double-double of the season and third in the last four matches. However, she was the only Panthers in double figures for kills as Chapman hit .141 as a team. The Panthers did have seven aces as a team, led by three from Marly Johnson.
After a negative hitting percentage led to a quick advantage for Pomona-Pitzer in the first, the Panthers bounced back in the second to even the match. Chapman hit .371 in the set and was able to sideout 70 percent of the time to key the set victory. The Sagehens had their lowest hitting percentage of the match at just .081 for the set and Johnson served eight points in a row late in the set to help the Panthers pull away.
The Sagehens did most of their damage from the right side as Paige Mountanos and Samantha Grabb combined for 32 kills with Mountanos hitting .400 in the match and Grabb hitting .478. With the two right sides leading the way, the Sagehens were able to cruise to a win in the third.
The Panthers made a late run in the fourth and closed the gap down to just one point at 24-23, With the Panthers hoping to force a fifth set, Chloe Gill slammed home the final kill to end the Panthers comeback attempt.
Chapman drops to 7-11 and 3-6 in the SCIAC while the Sagehens improved to 11-9 and 8-2.
The Panthers head to La Verne on Friday before returning home to take on Cal Lutheran at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
