Baseball takes elimination game from Scranton

Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Double digits on the scoreboard and a strong pitching performance kept the Chapman University baseball team in the Regional with an 11-4 win over Scranton. Senior Riley Glenn and sophomore Wyatt Thompson combined for 15 strikeouts in the win.

Chapman scored at least a run in six of their eight innings at the plate and put the game away with a three-run fourth and a four-run eighth. Graduate transfer Nick Kondo went 4-for-5 and drove in three, hitting two triples. Senior Mike Gorman and sophomore Davis Mieliwocki also had three hits as the bats stayed hot.

The Chapman lineup combined for 16 hits, including five for extra bases. It was the Panthers fifth consecutive game with at least 10 hits and 14th game this season.

On the mound, Glenn pitched six strong innings to stay perfect with a 5-0 record. He struck out a season-high 10 batters while allowing four runs on eight hits. Thompson came out of the bullpen in the seventh and shut down the Scranton lineup for the nine-out save. He struck out five, including striking out the side in the ninth to work around a pair of hits.

After trading runs early, senior Mack Cheli gave Chapman the lead back in the bottom of the third with an RBI single. The Panthers added to their lead with a Gorman single in the fourth. He scored when Kondo tripled to right center and Kondo sprinted home for a 5-1 lead on junior Drew Littwin's squeeze bunt.

Justin Pinkert's home run in the fifth brought Scranton back within two but Kondo singled in another run in the bottom half to make it 6-3. Up 7-4 in the eighth, junior Connor Montgomery laced a two-run single over a drawn-in infield. Gorman singled in Montgomery and Kondo followed with his second triple to make it 11-4

The Panthers eliminated Scranton from the tournament and advance to another game tomorrow. The game time and opponent will be determined at the end of the day. If only four teams remain in the tournament, Chapman will again play at 9 a.m. (PT). If five teams remain, Chapman will play at 12:30 p.m. (PT).
