ORANGE, Calif. - As the saying goes, a good defense always beats
a good offense. In a prototypical pitcher's duel that had both
starters going the distance, Pomona-Pitzer downed host Chapman
University 4-2 at Hart Park on Friday afternoon.
Chapman sophomore RHP Jordan Sigman logged his
second complete game of the year allowing only three earned runs
but was upstaged by Sagehen sophomore RHP David
Colvin who also went the distance. Colvin struck out four
and yielded two runs in the second complete game of his career.
Capitalizing on two first-inning walks and a Chapman error,
Pomona-Pitzer (29-3) scored two and went ahead for good. The
Sagehens collected the second of their pair of two-run innings in
the sixth on a two-run single by junior IF James
Kang who finished 2-5 with a run scored.
The Panther offense showed signs of life in the seventh when
senior IF Patrick Ohail singled to begin the
inning. A walk in-between a passed-ball and balk put runners on the
corners for sophomore IF Tyler Hadzinsky's RBI
groundout. After another passed-ball that allowed
saved strikeout victim Adam Kordich to reach
first, the Panthers brought the tying run to the plate.
However, it was not to be, as freshman OF Eric
Robbins, who pinch ran for Kordich, was caught stealing at
second base to end the threat.
Chapman (21-11) scored once again in the ninth on a RBI
groundout by senior IF Tristan Phillips which
scored OF John Semel who had tripled to lead off
the inning. Both paced the Panthers offense, going a combined 4-8
with a run scored.
The teams will square-off twice tomorrow in a doubleheader at
Pomona-Pitzer. The first pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
