Carl Agnew enters his third season on the Chapman University football staff in 2026, bringing an extensive coaching background, proven leadership and deep ties to the Panther football program. A Chapman alumnus and former member of the Panthers’ secondary, Agnew played under longtime Defensive Coordinator Coach Bishop, giving him a unique understanding of the standard, culture and defensive philosophy that continues to define Chapman Football.
Since returning to Chapman for the 2024 season, Agnew has helped elevate a defense that has emerged as the premier unit in the SCIAC. Over the past two seasons, the Panthers have finished No. 1 in the conference in total defense in back-to-back years. Since 2024, Chapman ranks No. 1 in the SCIAC in total defense, allowing just 229.3 yards per game, and No. 1 in scoring defense at only 15.1 points allowed per game. Agnew's impact has also been reflected in the development of his position group, which has already produced multiple All-SCIAC and All-Region honors during his time on staff.
Agnew brings nearly two decades of experience in Southern California football to Chapman. He spent 17 years at Los Amigos High School, serving as both a teacher and the program’s head football coach. His coaching career also includes head coaching stops at Santa Fe High School and Savanna High School, where he continued to build programs and develop student-athletes both on and off the field.
Now back at his alma mater, Agnew combines his extensive head coaching experience with an intimate knowledge of the Chapman defensive system. His experience developing defensive backs, leading programs and mentoring student-athletes has made him an important piece of a Panther defense that has established itself among the most dominant units in the SCIAC.
