ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's soccer team held off visiting Claremont-Mudd-Scripps for a 2-1 victory on Wednesday. Hudson Weinberger scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season.
The Panthers and Stags were even on the stat sheet with 15 shots apiece and each putting six on goal. However, the Panthers were able to find the back of the net twice for the crucial SCIAC win.
Cooper Haley put Chapman on the board less than six minutes. His shot came from distance after CMS had touched a pass out of the box. It found the waiting feet of Haley, who fired a rocket into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
The Panthers took that lead into the half and Hudson Weinberger took full advantage of a misplay to make it 2-0. With the CMS keeper almost 30 yards off his line, Weinberger pressured the ball at his feet. He was able to tap it away from the keeper and quickly rolled the ball into the net to double the lead.
CMS pushed forward and found a goal from Sean Lee in the 79th minute but the Panthers withstood the late pressure to preserve the victory.
Otto Richter made five saves for the Panthers to help them secure the three points.
Chapman heads out to Azusa Pacific on Saturday and returns home to face Occidental next Wednesday at 4 p.m.
