ORANGE, Calif. — The Chapman University men's water polo team came out seeking vengance after a loss Friday evening at home. They defeated La Verne at home Saturday 18-15 to clinch their first win of SCIAC play.
Matthew Arellano led the way offensively netting four goals on the day. The junior transfer is a newcomer to the program out of Saddleback College.
Sophomore
Rylan Takahashi and
Matthew Cormican contributed to the offensive dominance, recording a game high four assists each. In a 32 minute game, both teams combined for 33 goals. Arellano netted three of Chapman's first seven goals, including two in the first quarter of play. The Panthers sprinted ahead 7-2 early on. In the second quarter, La Verne crawled back into the game, netting four goals.
The second half proved exciting, as teams traded goals roughly every minute of play. Cormican and Arellano both led the way yet again, netting two goals each. Senior
Sammy Hendrickson also joined in, scoring back-to-back goals midway through the third period to bring the Panthers back to life. Defensively, goalkeeper
David Yacoub had 13 saves to along with two steals.
The Panthers managed to pull away in the final quarter netting another five goals. Chapman will look to continue build their momentum in SCIAC play. They will return home to host Redlands on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 7 PM.
