ORANGE, Calif. – After dropping the opening set, the Chapman University women's volleyball team bounced back to take the SCIAC Opener over Pomona-Pitzer – 21-25, 25-18, 25-15, 26-24. Aaliyah Sanders had a career-high 11 kills and Angelina Solis led the way with 16.
The four-set win was the fourth consecutive win for the Panthers, who have yet to play less than four sets in a match this season. The Panthers improved to 5-2 on the season.
Chapman hit .219 in the match despite Pomona-Pitzer recording 12 team blocks. Sanders hit .364 on her career night and Sasha Pugh hit .286 with 11 kills.
The Panthers dropped the first set but used a late run with Sammy Chambers at the service line to break away in the second. Chambers served seven consecutive points to turn a 17-16 deficit into a 23-16 advantage. She served one of her five aces during the run.
Chambers filled up the box score with 21 assists, four kills and 14 digs to go along with those five aces.
The Panthers held the momentum to build a big lead in the third and cruise to the quick victory. In the fourth, the Sagehens reached set point and looked to send the match into a fifth set. However, a serve into the net was followed by back-to-back miscues from the Sagehens to reverse the set point.
Chambers dumped over the final point to clinch the match for Chapman and start off SCIAC play with a four-set victory.
The schedule continues on Saturday when the Panthers visit CMS at 2 p.m.
