ORANGE, Calif. – James Krantz won in three sets to clinch the 4-3 victory for the Chapman University men's tennis team over No. 28 MIT. The Panthers bounced back after narrowly dropping the doubles point to grab four singles matches.
Krantz won a quick first set but dropped the second as his teammates grabbed three straight set victories to take a 3-1 lead. Ben Jorgenson won 6-3, 6-0 and was followed quickly by Ian Jordan with a 6-3, 6-3 win. Matthew Dewey put the Panthers one point away from the clinch.
Krantz went into a third set and pulled out a 6-2, 1-6, 6-1 victory to clinch the victory.
Krantz and Jordan also won their doubles match in the middle of the lineup with a 7-6 (7-4) win. MIT won the match at the top of the lineup but the other two went to a tiebreaker as Chapman won at No. 2 and MIT took the point with a win at No. 3.
Chapman wrapped up its non-conference schedule with the upset victory. The Panthers went 6-6 in non-conference matches and have five SCIAC matches remaining in the season, starting with Cal Lutheran at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
