Game Recap: Softball |

Lloyd wins 800th, softball shuts out Elmhurst twice

Janet Lloyd became just the 20th Division III coach to reach 800 career wins.

ORANGE, Calif. – Head coach Janet Lloyd earned her 800th career victory and the Chapman University softball team shutout Elmhurst 8-0 and 4-0 in both ends of a doubleheader. Anabell Hinojosa and Cameron Burroughs each tossed shutouts in the circle.

Game 1 – W, 8-0

The Panthers walked off with the clinching run in the sixth inning to give Lloyd her 800th career victory – all with Chapman. She is just the 20th coach in Division III softball history to reach 800 career victories and the eighth among active head coaches.

Hinojosa was once again dominant in the circle with her second shutout in a row. After Friday's no-hitter, she did not allow a hit until the fourth inning on Monday. The Blue Jays had back-to-back singles in the fourth with two outs before Hinojosa ended the rally to keep the shutout intact.

Offensively, the Panthers also went down in order their first trip through the lineup but had the first four batters reach safely in the fourth to take the lead. Sam Mather gave the Panthers the lead with a bases loaded single and sparked a four-run rally to put the Panthers in front.

Three more in the fifth and an RBI-single from Mia Reyes in the sixth ended the game early. Mather had another RBI-single in the fifth and finifhed the game 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Reyes also had a pair of singles.

Game 2 – W, 4-0

Burroughs took center stage with a six-hit shutout for her first win of the season. She struck out three and needed just 87 pitches for the complete game shutout. She scattered the six singles to preserve the shutout. The Blue Jays threatened with a bases loaded jam in the seventh but Katie Miyasato ran under a shallow fly ball in center field to end the game.

Burroughs had pitched just 11 innings all year before her complete game shutout – the first of her career.

Chapman did all its damage in the first inning. Five of the first six batters reached safely to set the stage for a two-run double from Brooke Wiegand. Wiegand lifted the double into the left center field gap to bring home two runners.

Reyes scored on an error before Wiegand's double and Jordyn Ballingit drew a bases loaded walk to cap the scoring.

Burroughs battled with Elmhurst's Dani Hood through the rest of the game as Hood was able to cool the offense through 6.2 relief innings.

The Panthers improved to 20-5 and shutout their opponent through both ends of a doubleheader for the second time this season. They also concluded the non-conference part of the schedule with a 15-4 record in non-SCIAC games.

Chapman jumps back into the SCIAC schedule against Pomona-Pitzer, hosting the Sagehens on April 3 at 3 p.m.
