Hinojosa tosses no-hitter in doubleheader sweep of Oneonta

Anabell Hinojosa threw Chapman's second no-hitter in less than two weeks.

ORANGE, Calif. – Anabell Hinojosa became the second pitcher to throw a no-hitter for the Chapman University softball team this season as Chapman swept a doubleheader from SUNY Oneonta on Friday. Hinojosa threw Chapman's second no-hitter in two weeks in an 8-0 run-rule victory.

Game 1 - W, 8-0

Hinojosa was in control through all five innings, allowing just one baserunner on a second inning walk to Abigail Silliman. She retired the next 10 batters in a row before Katie Miyasato walked it off with a game-clinching RBI in the bottom half of the fifth.

The Panthers scored in every inning except the second to support Hinojosa's dominant effort. Miyasato ended the game with a grounder to short that gave Milla Fukuda just enough time to sprint home and slide under the tag.

Fukuda led off the fifth with a double that looped into left center to put herself in scoring position. It was her second extra-base hit of the day as she also tripled in two runs in the first and scored on Bella Brischle's RBI-single on the next pitch.

When Fukuda trotted home in the first it capped a five-run opening inning. The Panthers added one more in the third and another in the fourth before the game-clincher in the fifth.

Fukuda was 2-for-2 with a walk and Chloe Wilson was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs as well. Shea Higa and Kloe Lobato also collected a pair of hits while Aleena Helms was on base three times, going 1-for-1 with two walks.

Hinojosa struck out six in her first career no-hitter while retiring five on fly outs and four on ground outs. She need just 67 pitches to complete the five-inning no-hitter and faced one batter over the minimum.

Game 2 – W, 11-3

Another lopsided victory came in a much different way as the Panthers rallied for nine runs in the sixth without recording an out. The nine-run rally turned a one-run deficit into a run-rule victory to complete the doubleheader sweep.

Rose Malen picked up her 10th win of the season. She allowed three runs on three hits in the first inning but was nearly perfect the rest of the way. The Red Dragons only baserunner after the first inning came on a wild pitch following a strikeout and the runner was later caught stealing by Jordyn Balingit.

Chapman left six on base through the first four innings and entered the fifth trailing 3-0. Sam Mather finally delivered the clutch hit with a bouncer up the middle to score a pair of runs and close the gap to 3-2.

In the sixth, Balingit opened the inning with a bloop single and Emily Tome followed with a walk. Trailing by one, Mia Reyes laid down a bunt and beat the throw to first. However, the throw sailed into right field and all the way into the corner as Balingit, Tome and Reyes all sprinted home to take the 6-4 lead.

The bats continued to roll as Chapman had eight hits in the inning and sent up 10 batters without recording an out. Another error late in the inning set up the winning run that Balingit brought home with a single. She started the inning with a hit over the shortstop's head and ended the game with a line drive into right.

Reyes had three of Chapman's 13 hits in the game. Mather drove in three RBIs. Ava Fagin also had a multiple hit game. Brooke Wiegand had the only extra base hit of the game with a double in the seventh.

The Panthers host Elmhurst on Monday at noon for their final non-conference doubleheader of the season.
