Game Recap: Softball |

Softball sweeps CMS to clinch SCIAC series

The Panthers survived a seventh inning rally and mounted a sixth inning comeback in the win.

ORANGE, Calif. – Late inning drama came in both games as the Chapman University softball team swept a doubleheader from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 6-5 and 4-1. The Panthers survived a comeback attempt from the Athenas in the first game and scored all four runs in the sixth inning of the second game to take the series.

The Athenas won Friday's matchup 3-1 for a series split.

Game 1 – W, 6-5
The Panthers went up early but CMS clawed back to tie the game at 3-3 in the sixth. The Panthers responded in the bottom half with a bases loaded threat.

Ava Fagin was then hit by a pitch for a 4-3 lead. Katie Miyasato scored when the Athenas failed to get the force at home. Shea Higa drew a bases loaded walk and it was again a three-run lead at 6-3.

The Panthers went to the bullpen and two quick outs had the Athenas down to their last out. A pair of singles, a hit batter and another single brought home two runs and put the go-ahead run in scoring position. Rose Malen came in to shut the door and struck out the next batter for a one-out save.

Anabell Hinojosa struck out six and walked two in six inning to pick up the win. Emily Tome had a pair of hits and an RBI.

Game 2 – W, 4-1
The pitching was quite literally lights out as the teams endure about a twenty minute delay when the lights turned off at El Camino Real Park. CMS' Hannah Adams was working on a perfect game at the time and kept that going through five innings.

Malen took the start in the circle after earing the save in game one. She allowed six hits overall and a run to come home on a sacrifice fly in the fifth – her first earned run of the season in her fourth start.

Adams took her perfect game into the sixth but Brooke Wiegand led off the inning with a single off the glove of a diving second baseman. Two quick outs were followed by two singles to load the bases.

Aleena Helms drove a single up the middle to tie the game at 1-1. Adams then threw 10 consecutive balls to walk in the go-ahead run. Tome's single put an exclamation mark on the rally for another pair of runs.

Malen worked her way around a leadoff single in the seventh to get the win.

The Panthers will next take on Team Japan in an international exhibition on Monday at 2 p.m. Japan, the No. 1 ranked team in the world, is wrapping up a tour of southern California in which it played several Division I teams.
