Game Recap: Softball |

Softball drops doubleheader against Pacific

ORANGE — Chapman softball dropped a doubleheader Friday afternoon against Pacific University who traveled down from Oregon to make their way around the SCIAC. The Panthers dropped the firsrt game 6-0 and the second game 6-5 after forcing the game into extras.

Game One

Starting star pitcher Rose Malen took to the mound in the first game to strikeout seven batters and retired on the day after five innings where she gave up five hits and two earned runs. Chapman had just four hits total in the first game struggling to get their bats going. Luckily, a shift occured in game two.

Game Two

The defensive player of the day, especially in game two, was freshman standout left fielder Emily Tome. The outfielder caught multiple crucial fly outs in the first, fourth and fifth innings to help end the inning and keep runs off the board for Pacific. In the sixth in particular, Tome sprinted across to left center field and caught the ball while virtually reaching out flat for it.

Offensively, senior breakthrough star Mia Reyes had an absolutely stellar day going for two hits and earning two runs. Tome also added another two hits and two runs and two RBI. Ava Fagin added another hit and RBI as well.

Overall, Chapman had Pacific on the ropes all afternoon, and fell behind two runs at the top of extras. With Kristy Kitabayashi placed on second to pinch run at the bottom of the eighth inning, Brooke Wiegand managed to hit a single and Kitabayashi squeaked home after advancing to third on a wild pitch the previous play. That run was Chapman's final of the game, as they narrowly fell 6-5 to end off the double header.

The Panthers will return home Saturday for two more games against Lewis & Clark College on Saturday, Feb. 28.
