ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's basketball team won its fifth straight game with an 86-79 win over Occidental on Wednesday. Chapman jumped into third place with the win and can clinch the No. 3 seed with a win in the regular season finale at Caltech on Saturday.

Chapman finished the regular season with a 12-2 overall record at home, including an 8-0 home record in SCIAC play.

A 12-0 run over nearly three minutes of the first half turned a tie game into a 12-point lead for the Panthers. Oxy fought back but Heberle's buzzer-beating three-pointer pushed the halftime lead back to 11 at 49-38.

The lead grew to as much as 16 in the first five minutes of the second half but Occidental roared back with a 13-0 run in the next three-and-a-half minutes to cut the lead into a single possession. Oxy tied the game with 8:45 to go as Nicky Clotfelter hit 1-of-2 free throws.

The teams traded blows for the next three minutes and were tied at 73-73. Heberle dropped in a pair of free throws to regain the lead. Schulz came away with a steal on the other lead, leading to a Mansour bucket and the Panthers never trailed again. Billings and Mansour made all four free throws late in the game to seal the victory.
