ORANGE, Calif. – A second half comeback extended the winning streak to four as the Chapman University women's basketball team outlasted Life Pacific 70-64. Four players scored in double figures as the Panthers overcame a slow start to grab the victory.
Chapman improved to 8-4 overall and the Panthers are now 7-1 on their home floor with the victory. Maile Nakaji and Kira Watanabe led the Panthers in scoring with 17 points each while Layla Woods scored 16 and grabbed 10 rebounds. Makenna Nitao added 12 points off the bench.
The Panthers fell behind early with a slow start, shooting just 25 percent in the first quarter. Chapman was playing its fifth game in nine days but chipped away at the early deficit. The shooting caught more of a rhythm in the second half and took off in the fourth quarter as Chapman shot over 46 percent and drained 4-of-7 three-pointers.
Nakaji and Watanabe led the Panthers from long range as each knocked down five three-pointers, combining to shoot 10-of-21 beyond the arc. Woods and Nitao did most of their damage in the paint.
With 10 boards from Woods and six from Trinity Barretto, the undersized Panthers outrebounded Life Pacific 37-35. The Warriors grabbed just five offensive rebounds while Chapman hauled in 15 for 16 second chance points. The Chapman defense forced 20 turnovers from the Warriors while the Panthers committed just eight on the offensive end.
Chapman turned a two-point halftime into an eight-point lead with a 10-2 run to start the third quarter. The Panthers never trailed again and ran the lead up to 12 points before withstanding a late run from the Warriors to hold on for the win.
Chapman is back in action on Saturday when the Panthers restart conference play with a trip to CMS. The game tips at 4 p.m. as the back half of a Chapman-CMS SCIAC doubleheader.
