Koerth leads comeback five-set win to open SCIAC play

Kaylee Koerth hit 18 kills in the final three sets to lead the comeback

ORANGE, Calif. – It was a five-set thriller to open SCIAC play as the Chapman University women's volleyball team defeated Redlands 26-24, 22-25, 19-25, 25-17. 15-13. Kaylee Koerth led the Panthers to the comeback win with 18 kills after coming off the bench.

With the match tied 1-1 and the Panthers trailing early in the third, Koerth entered as one of Chapman's outside hitters. Over the rest of the third, fourth and fifth, she took over and amassed 18 kills while hitting .289.

The Bulldogs held off the Panthers and seven kills from Koerth in the third to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Another seven kills without an error in the fourth helped the Panthers build a 14-5 lead to start the set and even the match up at two sets apiece.

The Panthers and Bulldogs took the fifth set down to the wire but Koerth hit four of Chapman's five kills, including the clincher, to seal the come from behind win. Neither team hit well in the fifth with both finishing in the negative hitting percentages for the set.

Koerth also had 12 digs for an abbreviated double-double. Clara Cronin led the Panthers with 28 digs and Ava Bradbury had nine total blocks. Olivia Sampson added 14 kills and five blocks. Chapman outblocked Redlands 12-9 in the match.

With a pair of aces, Koerth scored 21 points to lead the Panthers in the match/ Kelsey Magley added three aces to go along with 46 assists.

The Panthers are on the road tomorrow to take on Occidental at 4 p.m. but return home for a Thursday match with Whittier.
