Game Recap: Baseball | | Josh Phillips hit his school record 25th home run.

Baseball drops both to No. 9 Wis.-LaCrosse

ORANGE, Calif. – Josh Phillips extended his school home record but the Chapman University baseball team fell 8-3 and 8-6 to No. 9 Wis.-LaCrosse in a Saturday doubleheader. Phillips went deep in the first game for his 25th career home run.

Game 1 – L, 8-3

Phillips' third home run of the season sparked a bit of a Panther comeback as Chapman was trailing 4-1 before his solo homer in the third inning. Austin Dudas made it 4-3 in the fourth inning with an RBI-single to score Brennan Beckley.

The Eagles had taken the lead on a three-run homer in the third and then rallied for four runs in the eighth to get theor first victory of the season in their opening weekend.

Brand Lang had two hits, including an RBI-single in the first for the Panthers, as the top half of the Chapman lineup combined for seven of the Panthers' 10 hits.

Graham Stogner struck out six in the start and three relievers went on to strike out five more for another double digit strikeout game for the Chapman pitching staff. Jordan Kingston struck out four in two scoreless innings.

Game 2 – L, 8-6

The Eagles kept momentum into the second game with a pair of runs in the first, one in the second and three more in the fourth to put Chapman in a 6-0 hole. Chapman rallied back and had the tying run on base in the seventh inning but the last eight Panthers went down in order as Caleb Matl shut the door for the save.

Nick Naccarato put Chapman on the board in the fourth and the Panthers took advantage in the fifth to plate three runs to make it 7-4. Lang singled in a pair of runs with two outs to put Chapman back in striking distance.

After the Eagles squeezed in a bunt in the seventh Joey Capobianco and Matt Cristol each singled in runs to put the tying run on base.

Blake Beckley made a pair of spectacular plays in right field to robs the Eagles of extra bases. He made a diving catch going back to the warning track to end the sixth and chased down a fly ball in the gap to start the eighth, keeping Chapman in the game.

The Panthers finish up a busy weekend tomorrow with a single game against Willamette at 11 a.m.
