Women's basketball pushes win streak to six

ORANGE, Calif. – The winning streak extended to six games as the Chapman University women's basketball team came away with a 71-57 win over visiting Occidental on Wednesday. The Panthers pulled away in the fourth quarter to keep hold of second place in the SCIAC standings.

Layla Woods led the Panthers with 25 points and five steals while Shanna Brown scored 19 off the bench. Maile Nakaji contributed 14 points and four assists.

The game started with both teams finding an early offensive rhythm. The Panthers were able to keep pace with the short-handed Tigers through the first half as Oxy shot well over 50 percent in the first half, including shooting 66.7 percent in the first half.

Both teams answered every short run with a short run of its own to keep the game within five points. Over the first three quarters, the lead changed hands 10 times and was tied seven more times.

The Panthers pulled ahead in the third quarter with an 8-0 run during a four-minute stretch of the third quarter and never again relinquished the lead. Woods powered the run with six straight points and Brown put the finishing touches on the run with a layup after a Nakaji steal.

The Panthers came away with 15 steals in the game and forced 23 Occidental turnovers. The Tigers were held to just eight points in the fourth quarter on less than 30 percent shooting as the Panthers pulled away for the win.

Brown was one rebound away from a double-double and Kira Watanabe distributed five assists. As a team, the Panthers went 17-for-18 from the free throw line with Brown scoring 11 of her points at the line.

Chapman plays its next two games on the road, travelling to Caltech on Saturday and Whittier next week. The Panthers return to the Hutton Center on Feb. 19 to take on Redlands.
