ORANGE, Calif. – Jake Heberle's 25 points led the Chapman University men's basketball team to a 79-67 win over visiting Occidental on Monday. It was the first of two matchups this week between the Panthers and Tigers.
Monday's game was originally scheduled for Jan. 15 but was rescheduled due to the effects of the fires near Occidental's campus.
Chapman kept pace for the final spot in the SCIAC Tournament and stayed within a game of Pomona-Pitzer. Heberle's big night was supported by 19 points from Blakeley Stoughton and 18 more from Murphy Caffo. Heberle also added six rebounds, three assists, three steals and a pair of blocks without committing a turnover.
An 11-0 run over a four and a half minute span in the first half broke a 16-16 tie and put the Panthers in front for good. Caffo scored five of the 11 points to help fuel the Chapman run. Oxy battled back in the second half but never came closer than seven points.
Chapman held Oxy to just 28 first-half points and the Panthers shot 50 percent in the second half to stay out in front. The Panthers were 24-of-29 from the line.
Chapman and Oxy meet again on Wednesday in Eagle Rock, Calif. The Panthers next home game is at 7 p.m. on Feb. 12 in a crucial matchup with Whittier.
