The Chapman University women's basketball team defeated Pomona-Pitzer in a tight win Saturday afternoon at home. A close game defined in the fourth quarter with a final score of 50-45.
The Panthers commanded the first half of the game, leading by nine points in the second quarter. The Sagehens earned their first lead of the game 29-27 in the third quarter with the first made three-point shot of the game for either team. The third quarter score remained tight and the teams went into the final quarter tied at 31-31.
The teams traded baskets with a total of eight lead changes in the fourth quarter alone.
Maile Nakaji's floater in the lane gave Chapman a 44-43 lead and
Layla Woods knocked away a pass in the post on the next defensive possession. It was Woods that dropped in another basket to give Chapman a 46-43 lead. The Sagehens were forced to foul with the shot clock turned off.
Aidan Sherfey and Nakaji drained four free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
Woods and
Kira Watanabe led the way with 10 points each. Woods also grabbed seven rebounds while Watanabe had four assists. Sherfey was just shy of a double-double with eight points and nine rebounds. Neither team could find much of a rhythm offensively, combining to shoot 4-for-29 beyond the three-point line. The Sagehens shot 35.8 percent while Chapman shot 31.7 percent on the night.
The Panthers will travel to LMU on Dec. 16 for an exhibition matchup and return home on Dec. 20 to take on Life Pacific.
