Women's Basketball slows St. Scholastica

ORANGE, Calif.— Chapman women's basketball put on a defensive masterpiece against streaking St. Scholastica Sunday afternoon at home to win 60-49. The Saints were off to their best start in program history at 8-1 coming into Sunday. Chapman forced 20 turnovers and scored 24 coveted points off those turnovers to spoil the Minnesota team's west coast swing.

Aidan Sherfey had a career-high 14 rebounds- four of them being offensive boards. Maile Nakaji led all scorers with 18 to go along with four made three-pointers. Kira Watanabe netted 13 points of her own to go along with three assists and four steals.

The shorter quicker Panthers disrupted the bigger slower-paced St. Scholastica causing three different shot clock violations on a team that defeated fellow SCIAC school Cal Lutheran by 16 points just before coming to Chapman. Constant ball pressure in the back court and physical play kept the Saints out of rhythm and stagnant offensively.

Chapman also managed to put away 20 points off fast break and 31 bench points. The tipping point came in the third quarter, where the Panthers outscored the Saints 17-12. Strong ball movement left the Saints gasping for air on multiple plays midway through the quarter.

Chapman now improves to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play. They will take a small break from play for the Holidays before traveling to Abiliene, Texas. to play Hardin-Simmons and Howard Payne University on Dec. 28 and 29.
