Football extends win streak to seven

The Panthers defeated La Verne 30-14 to stay unbeaten in the SCIAC.

LA VERNE, Calif. – The Chapman University football team stayed unbeaten in the SCIAC with a 30-14 victory at La Verne on Saturday. Chapman heads into the SCIAC Championship Game against Cal Lutheran next week with a 7-0 mark in conference games.

The running game and defense continued to be the recipe for victory for Chapman. Preseason All-American Jacob Gaudi grabbed an interception for the second game in a row but took this one back 37 yards for a touchdown to put Chapman on the board. Fischer Huss and Andrew Latu each gained over 100 rushing yards and combined for three touchdowns.

Chapman ran for 261 yards as a team with Latu's 137 yards leading the way. Huss ran for 111 yards and two touchdowns.

Chapman's defense caused a pair of turnovers and sacked La Verne's quarterback five times. RJ Cannan led the Panthers with nine tackles, two tackles for a loss and a forced fumble. In total, Chapman's defense brought down La Verne players behind the line of scrimmage 11 times to limit the Leopards to just 165 yards of offense.

The defense also consistently held strong on third down and allowed just one third down conversion on 13 attempts. The strong defensive effort helped the Panthers overcome four turnovers on the offensive end.

Chapman overcame a slow start that saw the Leopard score just two plays into the game on a 30-yard fumble return. La Verne took a 14-7 late in the first quarter with the Leopards' only offensive score of the game. However, the Panthers responded with a seven-play, 61-yard drive to tie the game up.

A 49-yard run from Latu highlighted a 90-yard drive in the second quarter that used seven rushing plays to end up in the end zone for a touchdown. Huss took the final carry in nine yards to put the Panthers in front for good. La Verne moved into Chapman territory just three times after taking a 14-7 lead and never found its way back into the red zone.

For the third year in a row, the Panthers are back in the SCIAC Championship Game. They will host Cal Lutheran on Saturday at 1 p.m. with the winner earning the automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
