ORANGE, Calif. – In a First Round thriller, the Chapman University men's soccer team was eliminated from the SCIAC Tournament on penalty kicks. A scoreless draw needed eight rounds of PKs before the University of La Verne Leopards advanced 8-7.
An exciting matchup between the fourth and fifth seeds top open the SCIAC Tournament featured plenty of action as the ball moved up and down the field for a 90 minutes and then the 20 minutes of overtime. Both teams generated chances as Chapman took 24 shots and La Verne took 17.
The goalkeepers were equal to the task as Chapman's Alex Glynn made seven saves while Hector Duenas-Pena made 10 saves to send the match into the deciding penalty kick round.
The players continuously found the back of the net as the first 14 players to step to the spot converted his chance. With Chapman going first, Duenas-Pena made what proved to be the winning save in the eighth round and the next Leopard buried his opportunity to send the Leopards into the semifinals at Occidental.
The Panthers end the season with an overall record of 6-6-5.
