SPOKANE, Wash. – The Chapman University football team advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament with a dramatic 18-16 win over Whitworth. The Panthers broke up Whitworth's two-point try with no time on the clock to advance for the second time in school history.
A tight game throughout the second half, the two teams traded blows in the fourth quarter but Jacob Gaudi broke up a jump pass on the two-point conversion to seal the two-point victory for the Panthers. The pass breakup ended a drama-filled final quarter.
Carson Nichols' ended a nine-minute drive with his second field goal of the game to give Chapman a 12-10 lead. Both teams went three-and-out and the Chapman defense forced another punt with 4:18 remaining in the game. Six plays later, the Panthers had the ball on Whitworth's 28 yard line on fourth and four.
Tyler Pacheco found Kade Zimmerman one-on-one on the goal line and lofted a pass into the end zone for Zimmerman's second touchdown of the game and an 18-10 Chapman lead. Zimmerman caught eight passes for 120 yards and two scores to lead the Chapman offense. Pacheco completed 19-of-28 passes for 191 yards and two TDs.
Whitworth drove 62 yards in the final 1:34, scoring as time expired to set up the two-point attempt to try and force overtime. Gaudi's pass breakup on the final play ended a huge game for the Preseason All-American. He had 11 tackles, one sack and an interception on the second play of the game. Miles Grossman also grabbed an interception.
The Panthers ran for 173 yards on 38 carries. Andrew Latu's 95 yards on 11 carries led the rushing attack while Fischer Huss carried the ball 18 times for 78 yards. Whitworth passed for 223 yards and ran for 84 yards.
Nichols' two made field goals made him the first Panther to make double digit field goals in a single season. He now has 11 makes this season.
The First Round wins have never been without a scare for the Panthers as Chapman's first postseason win came after three overtimes in 2019. This is the second time the Panthers have advanced in the tournament in their five trips to the NCAA Tournament.
