ORANGE, Calif.— Chapman women's basketball sent a message Friday evening in the second half to George Fox to win 72-60. Fueled by pure dominance defensively in the third quarter, Chapman was down 47-44 with one minute to play in the third, then they went on a 12-2 run in the fourth quarter to go up 61-49 and gain the lead they would never relinquish.
Senior leader
Aidan Sherfey muscled her way to three layups through contact, earning the and-one on all three buckets. She went on to net 14 total points along with seven rebounds, a block and a steal. All-SCIAC forward
Layla Woods struggled in the first half, shooting just 2/11, but turned on the jets in the second half. The junior star shot seven for eight in the second half to total 18 points and eight rebounds. Her turn around jump shot proved to be virtually unstoppable.
Chapman also managed to cause 20 turnovers and had two George Fox players foul out. While the Bruins controlled pace in the second quarter, they shot just 27 percent from the field in the fourth quarter. Junior guard
Makena Nitao also added 10 points and
Maile Nakaji had a career high six steals off the bench.
Overall, the Panthers had 22 bench points and 30 points in the paint, despite being the smaller team overall. Chapman started off their season 2-0, and will head out to play Cal Poly for their first road game of the season on Monday, Nov. 24.
