ORANGE, Calif.— Chapman women's soccer closed out their regular season in a crucial game against La Verne in a 2-2 tie. With the tie, the Panthers have solidified their spot in the SCIAC tournament.
In the first half, Grace Vasquez launched a corner kick across the goalie box to find junior Pilar Vanheusden who took full advantage and finished it in the back of the net. The goal is Vanheusden's first goal of the season.
Ten minutes into the second half, Sidney Karjian earned a penalty kick and buried it to give the Panthers the critical second goal. Despite building momentum, La Verne bounced back, scoring their first goal of the game two minutes later bringing the score 2-1.
The Panthers kept up the pressure offensively, recording 16 shots, while La Verne had just seven shots. In the 83rd minute of the game, La Verne forward Laney Cutler drew a penalty in the goalkeeper box. Cutler earned the kick, shot it to the back of the net and the tied the game with mere minutes left.
The Panthers sit in fifth place in the conference with an overall record of 8-6-4 (5-4-3 SCIAC). Chapman will likely travel to Occidental to play the Tigers on Monday, Nov. 3 for the first round of the SCIAC Tournament.
