ORANGE, Calif. – Delaney Kitchens scored the only goal and four goalkeepers combined for a shutout as the Chapman University women's soccer team defeated UC Santa Cruz 1-0. Kitchens goal was her first of the season.
Kitchens' goal came just under 18 minutes into the match as the Panthers started to gain momentum and keep possession in the Slugs' half. With the Panthers on the attack, Karys McKinney slid a pass through to Kitchens near the top of the box. Her shot dipped into the far top corner for what proved to be the only goal of the contest.
Both teams generated chances as the match progressed but could not find the back of the net. Sienna Gomez made a leaping save late in the first half, punching a shot over the bar. Kate Crowley made four saves in the final 20 minutes as UCSC aggressively pushed forward, including two diving stops to keep the zero on the board.
The Panthers win comes in a short break from SCIAC play and they will look to ride the momentum back into the conference schedule when they host Occidental on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
