Harrison leads women's volleyball to comeback win

Olivia Harrison had 20 kills as Chapman defeated Oxy in five sets.

ORANGE, Calif. – A 20-kill match from Olivia Harrison led the Chapman University women's volleyball team to a five-set comeback win over Occidental. The Panthers snapped a three-game slide with the 23-25, 25-19, 19-25, 26-24, 15-13 victory.

Harrison started the match with seven kills in the first set and continued to dominate in the middle. She ended the match with 20 kills on .444 hitting. She also had one block while Ava Bradbury recorded nine total blocks. Bradbury hit .400 and put down five kills as Chapman's middles combined to score 30 points.

Emma Derksen had 10 kills on .214 hitting from the right side as the Panthers hit .224 as a team. Brook Leslie hit five kills in last two sets to help the Panthers comeback for the victory.

The two teams traded the first three sets and Occidental held a slim lead late in the fourth. The Tigers had match point after a hit into the net from Olivia Sampson made it 24-23. An errant serve kept the Panthers comeback hopes alive and Sampson did not miss her next two opportunities as she put down back-to-back kills to send the match into a fifth set.

Once again, Occidental jumped out to an early lead and built it up to 11-8 as the Tigers looked for a second five-set win over Chapman this season. The Panthers rattled off four straight points with a Derksen kill tying the match and a Bradbury block giving Chapman the lead.

The short run sparked a 7-2 run for the Panthers to end the match. Harrison put down her 20th kill to set up match point and Kelsey Magley served a match-winning ace to clinch the victory.

The Panthers spend the next week away at Whittier and CMS before returning home on Nov. 4 to face Cal Lutheran at 7 p.m.
