ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's basketball team fell 74-66 to visiting Whittier College. The Panthers drop to 2-2 in the SCIAC while the Poets improved to 3-0.
Shanna Brown's 16 points and 10 rebounds accounted for her second double-double in as many games. Kira Watanabe had a season-best 18 points on six made three-pointers. Two Poets also turned in double-doubles to fuel the road win.
Whittier built a 13-point lead in the first quarter but saw it dwindle down to a single possession in the second quarter a late run made it a 39-31 Poet lead at halftime. A 12-0 run through the middle of the third quarter turned a nine-point deficit into a three-point lead for the Panthers.
Aidan Sherfey knocked down the go-ahead jumper and Kali Cajala followed with a floater in the lane to give Chapman a 46-43 lead with 3:19 to go in the third. Whittier was able to fight back and took a two-point lead into the second quarter before outscoring the Panthers by six in the final quarter.
The Panthers head out on the road for their next three games, beginning with Saturday's game at Pomona-Pitzer at 2 p.m.
