Sherfey's 17 leads women's basketball past Cal Lutheran

ORANGE, Calif. – Aidan Sherfey scored a career-high 17 points to lead the Chapman University women's basketball team to a 69-60 win over visiting Cal Lutheran. The Panthers won their second game in a row to improve to 4-4 in SCIAC games.

A middle quarter surge on both ends of the floor saw Chapman build a 20-point lead. That lead was quickly whittled down into single digits but the Panthers were able to hold on to capture a crucial SCIAC win.

Sherfey's 17 points led the Panthers in scoring but she also filled the stat sheet in leading the Panthers to the win. She grabbed seven rebounds, assisted on three buckets, came up with two steals and blocked a pair of shots. She also did not commit a turnover as she helped the Panthers contain Cal Lutheran's posts.

Chapman led for over 36 minutes. The Panthers set a strong defensive tone in the early minutes, holding Cal Lutheran without a point for the first three minutes. Maile Nakaji drained a three pointer in the final minute of the first quarter and Chapman led the rest of the way.

Defensively, the Panthers held Cal Lutheran to just seven points in the second quarter to take a double digit lead into halftime. The Regals shot just 21 percent in the second quarter and 28.8 percent for the game. The Regals scored 19 points at the free throw line on 23 attempts but made just 3-of-21 three point attempts.

Nakaji made four three pointers to add 14 points off the bench and Shanna Brown scored nine points off the bench. Kira Watanabe had seven assists.

Cal Lutheran made a late push but never came closer than six points as Chapman went 6-for-8 at the free throw line down the stretch.

Chapman heads to Redlands on Wednesday and does not return home until Feb. 1 for a Saturday matinee with Pomona-Pitzer.
