Defense dominates in SCIAC opening win at Redlands

REDLANDS, Calif. – A dominant defensive effort led the Chapman University football team to a 32-10 road win at Redlands to open SCIAC play. The defense caused five turnovers and scored twice to lift the Panthers to the victory.

Jacob Gaudi set the tone early and Harrison Donato cashed in late as the Panthers picked off Redlands' quarterbacks five times in the game. Gaudi's interception came just six plays into the game and set up Chapman's first touchdown drive.

Donato's pick was the fourth of the game for the Panthers and came in the final two minutes of the game. He returned it 40 yards down the side line for a touchdown to push the Panthers over 30 points for the second time this season.

A pair of picks for Caleb Padrid and a game-ending interception for Kaulin Post gave Chapman five for the day. Mason Kubichek put the defenses first two points on the board with a sack of Jayden Mckey in the end zone for a safety.

The defense allowed Mckey to complete just eight passes for 95 yards while he was sacked six times. The Bulldogs managed just 98 rushing yards and scored their only TD on a 27-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Chapman improved to 2-1 on the season as Tyler Pacheco scored a hat trick with three rushing touchdowns. He ran the ball 11 times for 50 yards. Joey Yellen came off the bench to throw for 105 yards on 10-fo-16 passing. Luke Peterman threw for 75 yards and ran for 18.

Tate Zimmerman led the rush up front with two sacks while Alexander Terriquez had one sack as part of his team-leading nine tackles. Along with their six sacks, the Panthers also had 10 total tackles for loss and five QB hurries.

Jax Hudson hit his first field goal of the year when he put a 26-yarder through the uprights.

The Panthers return home for the annual Homecoming Game next Saturday in a SCIAC Surf Division matchup against Pomona-Pitzer at 7 p.m.
