ORANGE, Calif. – Leo Wells found the back of the net twice and assisted on another goal as the Chapman University men's soccer team opened the season with a 6-3 victory over Stanton University on Saturday. The Panthers and Elks were tied 3-3 in the second half but a flurry of late goals secured the victory.
Wells assisted on Garrett Lindfelt's opening goal in the 10th minute as Lindfelt buried a rebound for the early lead. Wells had dominated the early moments of the game up top as he put three early shots on goal. He finally broke through in the 20th minute when he swiped the ball from a defender and quickly shot and scored for a 2-0 lead.
With the game tied 3-3 in the 69th minute, Wells curved in a second goal into the upper 90 from outside the box. He surprised the defense and the keeper with a perfectly placed strike off of a pass from freshman Tyler Yzuel.
Freshmen Evan Crownfield and Evan White scored the last two goals of the match as the freshmen helped Chapman pull away late after season its 3-1 halftime lead erased. Another freshman, Dylan Chung volleyed a bullet past the keeper in the 34th minute for Chapman third goal.
The Elks earned and converted a penalty kick less than three minutes into the second and Victor Malaquias equalized the game in the 64th minute before Wells put Chapman out in front for good.
The Panthers placed 11 of their 13 shots on goal and Alex Glynn made four saves in goal for Chapman.
Chapman heads out to New Jersey next weekend for a pair of matches at Montclair St. The Panthers face Stevens on Friday before taking on the hosts on Sunday.
