Kelly shuts out Pomona-Pitzer to complete sweep

ORANGE, Calif. – A complete game shutout from Jillian Kelly secured a 1-0 victory and a SCIAC series sweep for the Chapman University softball team. The Panthers finished off the sweep of Pomona-Pitzer to improve to 13-8 on the season and 4-2 in the SCIAC.

Kelly stifled the Pomona-Pitzer lineup for seven innings, needing just 73 pitches to complete the shutout victory. Kelly allowed just three hits and struck out four with no walks in picking up her first win of the season in the circle.

Two of those three hits came in the fourth inning when the Sagehens opened the inning with a single and a double to put two in scoring position and down a run. Brooke Bullis popped up the next pitch into foul territory for Jojo Westerfield to run under for the first out. A hard-hit grounder to short kept the runners frozen while the out was made at first and a lazy fly ball to left field escaped the only jam Kelly was in all day.

After the two hits to lead off the fourth, Kelly did not allow a baserunner the rest of the game. She retired the last 12 batters in a row to end the game.

The Chapman offense produced just four hits but drew four walks and a hit batter to keep traffic on the basepaths. The only scoreboard blemish came in the second inning when Same Kennedy was hit by a pitch, stole second and moved up to third on a wild pitch. Mia Reyes laid down the perfect squeeze bunt and Kennedy beat out the play at the plate to score the game's only run.

The Panthers went on the load the bases in the second and again in the fourth but Devin Waddell wiggled out of both jams to keep the score at 1-0. She retired the last seven Chapman batters she faced. Waddell struck out eight through six innings of work and did not allow an extra base hit.

The Panthers have won four games in a row and will finish off their series with Whittier with a Wednesday doubleheader, beginning at 4 p.m. The two games were originally scheduled for March 23. Whittier won the first game of the series on March 24.
