Softball extends streak to six with wins over Whittier

ORANGE, Calif. — Chapman Softball keeps it rolling, winning its fifth and sixth games in a row in a doubleheader sweep of Whittier on Wednesday, April 10, 7-2 in game one and 4-1 in game two.

Game 1 - W, 7-2

The Panthers, who have been on fire as of late, have been led by Miranda Murphy, who's 16 for her last 21. Chapman's center fielder added a pair of two-hit games today, with her biggest hit coming in the second inning – a three-run triple to extend Chapman's lead to 4-0 in game one.

That capped off a four-run second for Chapman. Ella Milante got the Panthers on the board with an RBI single. Milante was one of four Panthers who tallied two hits.

The Poets scratched across a pair of runs in the third, but that's all they would get as Simi Lauwers picked up her sixth win of the season and second complete game. She allowed six hits and two walks and recorded two punchouts.

The Panthers tacked on a run in each of the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings en route to the victory. Sam Kennedy, who also posted two hits, smacked an RBI triple in the fifth after she stole home on a first-and-third play in the fourth. Aleena Helms came off the bench in the sixth with a run-scoring single.

Game 2 - W, 4-1

There was no touching Rose Malen as she cruised to a 74-pitch complete game to end the night. Malen was an unearned run away from the shut-out but boasted an impressive line of only two hits and one walk. She got soft contact all game but notched two strikeouts.

The Panthers' scoring came in a similar fashion, with an RBI single from Miranda Murphy to get things going in the second. Grace Fosselman unleashed her power with a bases-clearing triple to complete Chapman's offensive output.

The Panthers flashed the leather in the seventh. Malen started the inning, snagging a line shot right back to her in the circle. Then, two pitches later, Kennedy laid out parallel to the grass in right to record the second out.

With the victories the Panthers move to 15-8 on the season and 6-2 in SCIAC play. They'll look to improve upon their six-game winning streak when they take on Occidental this weekend. The first pitch of the series is set for Friday at 3 p.m. at El Camino Real Park.
