ORANGE, Calif. — A first-inning run is all Chapman Softball would need as Jillian Kelly spun her second-straight shutout in the Panthers' 1-0 win over Occidental on Friday, April 12.
The win marks Chapman's seventh straight as they improve to 7-2 in SCIAC play.
Kelly was masterful, allowing only three hits and a walk while striking out ten Tigers. Of the four base runners Kelly allowed, none made it past second base. She did it all on 94 pitches.
Chapman's lone run came four batters into the game. Miranda Murphy doubled to lead off the game – Murphy has hit safely in her last eight games and is 17-for-24 in that span. With one out in the inning, Jojo Westerfield roped a line drive into left, just deep enough to score Murphy.
Kelly seldom faced trouble, but the Tigers led off the seventh inning with a single. The very next pitch, she induced a fly-ball double play – a routine catch in center and the throw from Murphy to first nabbed the stealing runner. After a two-out walk, Kelly recorded her tenth and final strikeout to end the ballgame.Â
She picked up the win – her second of the season, she's now 2-3. Over her last two games, Kelly has thrown 14 innings, allowed no runs, six hits, and has tallied 14 punchouts.Â
Chapman's overall record improved to 16-8 with the win. Tomorrow's doubleheader set for 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. at Occidental has been moved to Tuesday, April 23. The Panthers' next game will be a makeup game at Redlands on Wednesday, April 17.
