ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's tennis team fell 5-4 to visiting Vassar on Saturday. The Panthers dropped to 1-2 on the season with all three matches being played against ranked teams.
Vassar won the match after taking two of the three doubles points and winning three singles matches in straight sets.
Andy Hess and Caleb Wilkins each won three-set matches but both victories came after Vassar had clinched the match. Wilkins played a back and forth three-setter as he cruised to a first set victory and built a 5-2 lead in the second set. Vassar's Jay Wong fought back to take a 7-5 win in the second and then built up a 5-2 lead in the third. Wilkins returned the favor with five consecutive game wins to take the match 6-1, 5-7, 7-5.
Hess took the No. 4 match 6-0, 3-6, 6-4 to close out the day and Matthew Dewey won 6-0, 6-4 at No. 5.
The Panthers take on another ranked opponent on Monday as they host N. 6 Bowdoin.
